E Safety Tips for Parents / Carers

Are you thinking of buying your child an IPAD/Tablet/IPHONE/Notebook?

Primary school aged children do not have the ability to stay E safe alone.

Please if you must give your child these items then ensure you follow the precautions listed below;

  • Talk to your child, what do they want to use it for? Do they need it?
  • Do not allow your child to use it unsupervised i.e. to keep it in the bedroom.
  • Learn how to use it, does it have sufficient virus and parental controls?
  • Do you know how to check surfing history on your browser?
  • It is not possible to stop all unsuitable content!

The internet has changed all of our lives, particularly our children’s. For parents and carers this opens up a whole new world of things to be aware of. For many of us, this can all be a bit too much. You might be struggling to keep up with the things your child is doing online, you might wonder whether what they are doing is safe, and you might also be thinking how can I be as good a parent online as I am offline?

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) can help with their website, www.thinkuknow.co.ukThis site aims to make online parenting simple.  There is a link to a video that covers topics such as, talking to your child about the technologies they use and the things they might see, such as unsuitable images. www.devon-cornwall.police.uk also contains lots of good information and links.
